Hillary, R.I.P. Please Welcome Bill's New Wife, Miss Thang and Five New Eggs!

Granny Nick and I celebrated Easter weekend at the lake. We weren’t alone, we had a long list of visitors to keep us company. Bill, our resident male bluebird, has recovered from the death of his wife, Hillary. About a month ago, Hillary went missing just after the couple built a nest in our bird house. Bill sat on the wire for weeks watching and calling. It was so sad. Late one afternoon, he showed up with a young female and he showed her the nest. (I ran down with a handful of mealworms to help him seal the deal!) Eventually, he sold her on the house and this week, Bill and Miss Thang have a nest full of five eggs. And, surprisingly, the eggs are all white, not the usual blue. Turns out to be a somewhat rare occurrence in bluebirds. Starting on or about April 24, these special eggs should hatch. We also have two purple martins living in the gourd! Tons of butterflies too. Come visit. Fish are jumping!
